Salzburg- old magical city in Austria

Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria, the old town is full of old world charm, hill top castle, magnificent palaces, exquisite churches and cathedrals, the old town squares, wonderful statues, beautiful gardens, alleyways, belfries, weathered domes and of course a majestically flowing river bifurcating the valley.

The River Salzach runs through the centre of Salzburg

View of Salzburg by the side of River Salzach with the Hohensalzburg Fortress behind.
You can see this fortress from mostly anywhere in the town as its on a really high mountain...The name Salzburg literally means "Salt Castle", and derives its name from the barges carrying salt on the Salzach river, which were subject to a toll in the 8th century.

The market place of Salzburg's "Old Town" (Altstadt) with its world famous baroque architecture is one of the best-preserved city centres north of the Alps, and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The city is noted for its Alpine setting.
